Our Lewisham residents have an exciting new neighbour! Vinothec Social is a sophisticated, yet lively and fun new pizza and wine bar and it’s located right beside our Fizzy development!
The bar boasts an extensive and unique range of wines, beers, and spirits, all carefully selected by its founders. We had a chat with one of the co-founders, Arnaud, and gathered a great insight into the inspiration that brought Vinothec to life. Here's what he had to say:
How did Vinothec Social come to be?
I started the Vinothec restaurants with my friend and business partner, Keith Lyon about 5 years ago. He is an extraordinary wine taster! Vinothec Social is part of Vinothec Compass, and we have another successful, restaurant in North Greenwich called Ardoa. We both share an unconditional passion for history, geography, wines and flavours. Keith mostly works at Ardoa which is a Basque restaurant and a delicious pintxo bar. Ardoa means wine in Basque, and we have a fabulous selection of wines here too.
How would you describe your business?
It's a place to socialise and reconnect with a beautifully simple concept, offering a great catch up destination. We provide the best coffee, great pizza, amazing wines, tasty cocktails, and fun beers. It's a place where kids are free to run around and have fun in the afternoons. We want to embrace the new Lewisham and truly be a part of the neighbourhood.
What makes Vinothec Social special?
Firstly, we all live very close to Vinothec, making this an authentic neighbourhood business. We love engaging with local people because they're our neighbours. Secondly, we source most of our things locally, supporting other independent businesses; we buy our kitchen goodies from Antonio Deli in Lewisham, and work with Paul Rhodes Bakery in Greenwich. Our coffee is from Curves in Margate (and we have our own blend), and we personally know all the winemakers and brewers that we work with.
What’s your personal favourite wine on your menu?
I'm in love with all the wines! There's no single big name, just wines that taste spectacular without compromise on flavour and personality. But if I had to choose one, I love the Syrah from Domaine Darde. Immense wine with so much drive - blue fruit, pickled carrot, and bacon fat on the nose. Just lovely.
What does every customer need to try?
The coffee from Curve Roasters - it's spectacular and has a superb red fruit finish! From the wine list, Rosso di Montalcino is a beautiful classic. With hazelnut, autumn fruits, and a black autumn dust - magnificent.
In all your travels, what place/vineyard/wine bar do you draw the most inspiration from?
When I worked with wine advocate, Robert Parker, I was exposed to the best wine possibly ever made. We opened everything, but I have a memory from a 1928 tasting from Haut Brion in Margaux, and that was much more than ok.
And finally, what influenced your entry into the wine industry?
I arrived in the UK in 1999 after studying geography, and during my studies, I researched the wine region. When applying for jobs, someone misread my CV and thought I had a master's degree in wine geography! At the time, yes was the only English word I knew, so they offered me a stall to start a brand-new project, at none other than Borough Market! I haven’t looked back since.
